ChatGPT ads
ChatGPT shows ads below its answers. When someone clicks one of your ads, Clickport records the visit under Paid Search, with ChatGPT as the source. Free visits from links in ChatGPT answers stay in AI Search. You see both side by side, so you know which visitors you paid for and which came free.
How Clickport spots an ad click
OpenAI adds a click reference called oppref to the landing page address of your ad. Clickport reads it when the visit starts. This works without UTM tags, and it works when no referrer arrives, for example when the ChatGPT app opens your page in its own browser.
- Click on your ad: Paid Search, source ChatGPT.
- Click on a link in a ChatGPT answer: AI Search, source ChatGPT.
- Ad link tagged with
utm_source=chatgptand a paid medium such ascpc: Paid Search, source ChatGPT, with or withoutoppref.
A display or shopping medium on the ad link sends the visit to Display or Paid Shopping instead. Google Ads clicks follow the same rule.
Tag your ad links
Tags are optional. They add your campaigns and ads to the Campaigns panel, so you can compare one ad with another. In Ads Manager, add the tags to the ad's landing page URL or to the tracking parameters of the campaign. OpenAI keeps them on every click.
Use chatgpt as the source, so every ad visit shows under one name.
See what ad visitors did
- In the Sources panel, open Channels.
- Click Paid Search. The whole dashboard now shows paid visits only.
- Switch to Sources. ChatGPT shows next to Google and Bing.
- Click ChatGPT to see the pages, goals, countries and devices of your ad visitors.
The Sources panel with the Paid Search channel selected.
To compare paid and free ChatGPT visits, repeat the steps with AI Search. Goals show how many visitors from each group sign up or buy, and Sessions show the path of every ad visitor, page by page.
Why Ads Manager shows other numbers
- Clicks are not visits. Ads Manager counts clicks on the ad. Clickport counts visits that loaded your page. A visitor who closes the tab before the page loads is a click, but not a visit.
- Bots stay out. Clickport removes bots before they reach your reports. That includes OpenAI's ad review bot, which checks your landing pages.
- Timing. Ads Manager reports conversions 24 to 48 hours after they happen. Clickport shows goals as they happen.
Do you need OpenAI's pixel?
Not to measure what ad visitors do on your site. Clickport does that with no cookies and no consent banner. OpenAI's pixel matters when you want conversions inside Ads Manager, for example to bid on them. According to OpenAI's documentation, the pixel sets a click cookie for 30 days and a browser ID cookie for 365 days, and it starts with consent switched on. Where the law requires consent for cookies, the pixel needs your consent banner.
